My God-Sized Dream: Dear Chihuahua,

Dear Chihuahua of Fear,

I have some things I’d like to say to you.

You see, I know what it’s like to be chased by you, oh tiny, insignificant, annoying one.

Most mornings I wake up ready to go. I tie the laces of my running shoes, stretch, crank up my playlist, and get moving.

On my early morning run, I don’t usually notice if you’re there.

It could be that my playlist of praise is vastly overpowering your presence. Or, it could be that I’m simply too tired to notice that you might be trying to run me down.

But as I continue to run throughout my day, that’s when I notice you.

You nip at my heels when I continue dreaming dreams.

You chase me with your little two-inch-long legs if you think I’m moving closer to those dreams.

You bark with a sound that resembles a child’s squeaky toy, far more than a canine, at the very moments I’m finding my voice.

On the occasion that you sink your teeth in…oh, I’m sure you’re pretty proud.

But the thing is, Chihuahua, you’re little...in one swift kick, I can send you to the curb.*

I can outrun you…I’m pretty sure you can’t pull an 8:15 mile with those tiny little legs.

And when you bark? Well, I just turn up the praise a little louder and let my Father speak over the fear.

You may bite, sometimes. You may draw a little blood, make me cry…you may even leave a mark.

But, guess what?

Those emphasis-on-the-word-little marks are going to be nothing more than tiny battle wounds. Scars to remind me of overcoming and victory and the fact that

I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (NIV)

It’s Tuesday, friends! Come on over to Holley’s place to check out how some incredible, God-Sized dreaming sisters are staring down the Chihuahuas of Fear in their own lives.

  1. Great way to keep the “Chihuahua” at the right size. Keep your eyes on God!

  2. “No chihuahuas were harmed in the writing of this post.” hahaha! Great post! After you let those little stinkers bite you a time or two, you realize it’s not as bad as it seems. : )

    • Thanks for laughing at that…I was worried it might teeter on the dorky side. 😉 I love what you said, too…what I’m afraid of often is never as bad as I’m expecting. Thank you, friend…you are such an encouragement. Blessings! :)

  3. Oh I love this, Mel! Isn’t that exactly how fear words … it presses in on us when we’re tired and vulnerable. Thank you for calling it what it is: little and weak!

  4. Wowzer!!! Love, love, love this….could picture you running through your day and that little pest trying to trip you up! Big smile as I type!! Love you Mel!
    Judy

    • Oh, thank you, Judy…I definitely let that little yapper trip me up too often, but He’s teaching me a lot about trust. And my dreaming sisters have had some pretty awesome things to share today, too…makes me feel a little braver. 😉 Love to you, friend!

  5. They’re nothing – scars to remind me, love love love this. The picture of us outrunning that fear (even though I’m not a runner, I’m with you on this one!).

  6. Way to kick fear to the curb!

  7. love your little disclaimer, I almost felt like I needed to put one in too 😉 Your post makes me think of the song you posted last week, by Point of Grace?? I think it was “Turn up the Music,” “turn up the music, turn it up loud, take a few chances let it all out. You won’t regret it..”love that song :) I usually keep music turned on during the day to keep the pesky yapping away!

    • It is amazing how if my mind is focused on the right things, I don’t spend so much time thinking about fear. And I LOVE cranking up the music! :)

  8. Love this! I can totally relate. I love early morning runs and something feels so new and light and refreshing in the morning, like His mercy overtakes fear. And you are so right…..sometimes it begins to emerge in the afternoons and evenings like a prairie dog peeping out of his hole. I can so relate to this and love your creativity in this post. So well said and such a fun read. Blessings!

  9. “No chihuahuas were harmed in the writing of this post.” That’s got to be one of the favorite lines I’ve read today. Remembering to listen to the voice of the Father as opposed to the yipping pup is so important, especially so when it feels like the barks are magnified. I love Christine’s point too: their bite isn’t as bad as you fear.

    • One thing I’ve been reminded of over and over today is that I choose who I listen to…may it NOT be a yapping chihuahua! :) Thanks, sweet friend…hope you had a beautiful day. :)

  10. I love the picture of that little rat like dog chasing you around but being yards behind. You have the strength and endurance to stay far ahead.

  11. Thanks for reminding me that scars are evidence of overcoming and victory. I will continue kicking that little dog to the curb. Blessings friend!

    • Thanks, friend! It’s so fun to see you pursuing the dreams God has given you…I’m looking forward to reading more! Blessings! :)

  12. This was awesome friend… keep kicking those fears to the curb with God’s truth… and I loved your disclaimer…

  13. Excellent! Especially this: “Scars to remind me of overcoming and victory and the fact that I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Yeah!
