So a few months ago, I wrote a post about a vest.
Maybe this picture will remind some of you you? Yes? 😉
I love a good, funky piece of clothing.
And, sometimes? Well, sometimes I’m willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get it…like stalking eBay for years and then getting into bidding wars. You know, hypothetically. 😉
But this vest isn’t what I’m writing about…even though, oh my heart. I love it. 
You see, y’all (love that word…my heart is totally Southern) were so amazingly sweet when I posted this. I got comment after comment…online and in person…I’ll make one like that for you! Or, I’ll teach you how to make that!
The one thing I didn’t mention in that lovely little post is that I actually can crochet. And, true to Mel form, I taught myself. About a year ago.
Oh, there’s no way I could make that vest…most of what I come up with are in the scarf or cute-hat-with-a-flower categories. And most also are given away. I rarely make anything and actually keep it for myself.
But about a week ago, I watched this cheesy, Hallmark-ish movie. It was a remake of The Gift of the Magi, and in it, the main character had this scarf.
Oh, goodness, this scarf.
It was waaaaay more interesting than the actual movie…and this slightly hippie, Boho-lovin’ girl couldn’t stop staring at it.
And as I continued to focus on that funky scarf and completely ignored the plot line, I thought, I can make that. It was just a bunch of granny squares sewn together…something I didn’t know how to do, but hey. What’s YouTube for, after all? 😉
Sunday afternoon I finally had a little time to sit down. True, again, to Mel form, I just pulled out my hook and yarn and got to work, sure that it would be a piece of cake to whip up a few of those squares.
Ha. Ha. And Ha.
Nope, I threw away my first mass of tangled yarn and pulled up YouTube later that night. Ten minutes later I had it figured out…and once I got going, I couldn’t stop. (And I may-or-may-not-have stayed up until an ungodly hour of the morning making those cute little squares…which maybe weren’t looking so cute at…ahem…one in the morning.)
But the lack of sleep? Totally worth it.

I love that cute scarf. Whenever I am out and see anything that is “slightly hippie, Boho” I think “Mel would love that”. I love that you find something you want to learn and you find a way to do it. I tend to get to flustered and want to quit.

What a great idea! If you sew these squares together to form 2 squares or rectangles, you can sew them together, make a long thick braid with the same yarn as a handle and voila, make a nice hand/ carrier bag! I immediately remembered your photos. A bit hard not too….!!!

Well, friend, if you ever get the ambition to make another one you can send it to me. That’s just adorable! I recently learned how to “hand crochet” a scarf and it takes all of about 5 minutes to make one. But crocheting with a hook has always eluded me, despite my Grandma’s best efforts.
You crack me up!!! Way to go with your “Mel-ness”. I’m going to remind you that if you go back through that vest post you will find that it was supposed to make an appearance at Allume. Ahem! Next year definitely. Now THAT would’ve brought the extreme hotness to the photo shoot.
Ok, why did I not think of wearing that vest at the photo shoot? Next year. *wink* I actually did wear it at Allume, but only for a morning. I brought the wrong shirt to wear under it, and I was freezing, so I went back to my room and changed. I’m sorry you missed seeing it in all of it’s crazy, rainbow glory!
