- I still occasionally go to the wrong side of the car.
- The words apa and aduh are part of my daily vocabulary.
- I felt it sprinkle today and wanted
it to rain harder.
- It feels wrong to show up for anything early.
- Being early for something means showing up on time.
- I crave rice every day.
- I ate pizza last week and thought it would have been better with sambal (chili sauce).
- My dogs respond better to me when I speak to them in Indonesian than in English.
- I miss our motorbike and how little it cost to fill the gas tank.
- I send friends an sms, not a text, when I want to tell them something.
😉
- I still think in kilometers and think the speed limit signs look too slow.
- I’m still amazed when I see stop lights that have all the
lights working.
- I’m still not used to drying my hands with a towel.
- I still look right-left-right when crossing the street.
- I see a spider and, based on its size and hairiness, decide whether to let it live or not.
- I value the fact that I can walk through my house barefoot at night and not have to worry about stepping on a cockroach.
Just a little glimpse into life…and what reverse culture shock looks like.
